Abstract

The technique of “Gestalt Games” is one of the therapeutic Gestalt techniques that aim at providing the effective means of unifying patient’s thought with feeling (Levitsky and Perls, 1974).

This research was held between 24-9-2000 and 4-8-2002 (about 2 years) For the aim of analysis both the structure and functions of the technique of “Gestalt Therapeutic Games” in group psychotherapy and to reach a suitable classification of those games.

30 games (in 28 sessions) were selected to be studied in this research. The selected games were subjected to a detailed qualitative analysis of their structure and functions.

Four main categories of “Gestalt therapeutic games” were mainly involved: “Complete the Debate”, “empty Chair”, “Game of Reversals”, “Game of Repetition”.

“Gestalt Therapeutic Games” were found to have a constant structural background upon which different varieties of this technique could stand.

They were proved to be an effective therapeutic tool that could accomplish many goals in the same time, regarding the group as a whole, the therapist, the trainees and the individual patients.

“Gestalt Therapeutic Games” were concluded to be an easy and effective technique, both to practice and to get trained on.
