Abstract

The overall aim of this study was to explore the role of working through the concepts of true/pseudo femininity and true/pseudo masculinity  according to object-relations theory in the process of group psychotherapy.

The studied group psychotherapy program includes three different ongoing therapy groups that were conducted in the Neurology and Psychiatry department of El-Minia University Hospital.: Adult male therapy group, Adult female therapy group, therapy group for difficult female patients. Data collection started July 2003 and ended July 2005.

Insight and understanding of this role was achieved using (Discourse Analysis), in which textual data was gathered from in-depth semi-structured interviews guided by true-female and male characteristics questionnaire and transcriptions of the group therapy sessions.

Analysis of textual data revealed that the psychopathological process includes three stages: burying true female elements, burying true male elements and displaying pseudo-female and pseudo- male elements. It also revealed that The therapeutic process includes two stages: re-owning true female and true male psychological elements and integrating them into unified whole.
